Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) from Dr. Joanny's Clients Don't see a question here that you have? Click here to share your question with visitors to this page! What is Chinese Medicine? Chinese medicine is a paradigm of medicine. A paradigm is a worldview underlying the theories and methodology of a particular scientific subject, in this case, medicine. Chinese medicine has its own set of terminology which can't always be translated directly into another language, its own set of diagnostics and of course, solutions. Is Chinese medicine based on science? Science is the intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systemic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. Also a science is a systematically organized body of knowledge on a particular subject. Chinese medicine medicine is based on observation and experimentation which started thousands of years ago. Of course it had its primitive beginnings, just as ANYTHING in its infancy might, but the science evolved through the ages. It was refined, experimented with, on millions of PEOPLE served. Detailed record keeping kept on top of developments of the day, with practitioners and scholars debating this and that treatment or modality. Then textbooks were written to guide students, just as is done today. Back to Top
What makes Chinese medicine different as a science? What is different is that the scientific studies in Chinese medicine also took into consideration the internal and external environment of the human being living in his or her natural environment. There is an implicit and explicit consistency in Chinese medicine when it comes down to defining the human condition relative to health. We know why you're well and we know why you get sick. We have standards of health. Back to Top What is Chinese medicine based on? Ancient Chinese medical doctors through thousands of years paid close attention to the HUMAN EXPERIENCE (NOT of other animals), and subsequently developed the theories and practices that are still in use today. Without the benefit of machines, but through the use of observation and correlations. Back to Top
How does Chinese medicine really work? Chinese medicine stimulates the nervous system - so your brain and your various nervous systems. It activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System which is the nervous system that calms you down. It's known as the "Tend and Befriend" nervous system or the "Rest and Digest" nervous system. It is the opposite of the Sympathetic Nervous System, AKA as "fight or flight". Too many people are stuck in this "fight or flight" mode. Along with the different modalities in Chinese medicine plus the positive psychology that I practice, you regain your balance by learning how to tap into that relaxed state while controlling the "fight or flight" response.
Is Chinese medicine a LIVE medicine? The paradigm of Chinese medicine continues to evolve as mankind evolves. We keep improving and updating our practices. Chinese medicine promotes wellness and health. Because we have standards. So, we just simply do things better and differently. Because Chinese medicine is practiced in so many different parts of the world now, each region is discovering and creating from different perspectives like never before. So the medicine continues to expand. Back to Top What is a standard of health? The word standard means a level of quality or attainment. There are standards for what makes a good cake, for instance, or what makes a successful business successful. Why shouldn't there be a standard or several standards, for health. Chinese medicine developed many. Then you can compare what you're going through with the ideal, which by the way, is attainable by you and anyone else you know. If you want to. It's not perfection either. The simplest standard of health is based on how you feel. If you feel calm and happy, you're in the flow of energy. If you're feeling pain, whether it be emotional or physical and often they ARE combined, then you are out of control of your energy. Back to Top
What is Chinese medicine based on part 1? Chinese medicine is based on sound scientific principle and most importantly, on positive psychology. This is important. Until your change your mind about your life, you won't change your physical existence. You've got to change the way you look at yourself and your life and understand that everything really is better than your thought previously. Back to Top
What is Chinese medicine based on part 2? Chinese medicine is based on humans and only humans. The modalities were used, experimented on, and refined with humans. Not animals. So this is medicine for mankind not animal studies. You're a human being, not a pig or a dog or a mouse or a fruit fly. Enough said? Back to Top
What is Dr. Joanny's underlying philosophy part 1? As a human being, you have a charter of rights that contains thus: • You have the right to be here. • You have the right to feel and have feelings and therefore, to want. • You have the right to act in the way you see fit. • You have the right to love and be loved. • You have the right to speak and hear truth. • You have the right to see the truth. • You have the right to know, including accurate information, to the truth. • It’s okay to be who you are.
I spend a lot of time with you to make sure you understand these. They're the keys to your long term happiness and ageless demeanor. One of my clients noted to me, because I'd helped several members of the family, that one member of her family observed how calm her relatives had become and wondered about that. Back to Top
What is Dr. Joanny's underlying philosophy part 2? I will always tell you the truth. I've come to understand that this means that I will always focus on the good that you have inside you and in your life. You begin to focus on what's important to you and on what you really want. You begin to understand and practice true responsibility for yourself. Back to Top
What is Dr. Joanny's underlying philosophy part 3? I'm a teacher at heart. The word doctor means teacher. That's what we're supposed to be doing: teaching you what to do and how to heal. I teach you to love and respect yourself. This is positive psychology at its best. This is the way to your healing. Back to Top
What is healing? I am your guide to healing, but you do the actual healing. You know you're healing when you finally have peace of mind and a self awareness that transcends all of life's challenges and you just go ahead and be your self, no matter what. Then you no longer experience pain or discomfort, in your body or in your mind. Back to Top
What about Chinese herbal medicine? Chinese herbal medicine is based on the same scientific principles of observation and systematization. All medicine are to be taken seriously. Anything taken therapeutically is dangerous when taken out of context and misunderstanding of the basic principles of Chinese herbalogy. Therefore, all Chinese herbs should be prescribed by authorized and well educated practitioners of Chinese medicine. Chinese herbs aren't candy. Back to Top
What is a Chinese herb? Chinese herbs can be animal, any part of a plant, insect, mineral (rocks), things (such as oyster shells). Anything from the natural world can be a herb in Chinese medicine. That's because every one of these herbs has properties that can help you heal. Back to Top
How are Chinese herbs used? Through experimentation, Chinese herbs are used in synergistic combinations of herbs, which we call formulas. Chinese herbs are seldomly used in singles, by themselves. Each herb in a formula has a reason to be the formula. Herbs are not combined at random. They are there to accomplish a certain goal. Back to Top
How do Chinese herbs work? They remove what you don't need, such as dampness/phlgem which is responsible for a lot of degenerative disease such as cancer and excessive weight. They add or increase to your body, such as when you need any of the different human types of energy: Yang, Yin, Qi, and Blood. They will lower or decrease the levels of the aforementioned when there's too much. The bottom line is: you get to a point of balance. But, if unmonitored, you can go to the opposite of where you were. I teach you to recognize when you've had enough, because you start LISTENING to your body, which gives you all the wisdom you ever need. Back to Top
Are Chinese herbs supplements? Chinese herbs are medicinal. They are not used as supplements. Specific formulas make you stronger by taking specific actions on pathogens that are making you weak and sick. They are designed to be used for a relatively short time, unless you're relatively weak, then you may be on herbs for a while. It all depends on your individual needs. Back to Top
What about Chinese acupuncture? Chinese acupuncture is just ONE tool in our tool kit. But it's the most well known. And today, it seems to be regarded that anyone with the mere knowledge of anatomy can do it. Not so. It's not where you put a needle, it's why you use that acupuncture point. It's the intention that both you and your doctor have when those needles are placed into your body. Back to Top
What are acupuncture points? Acupuncture points are centers of energy. Each acupuncture point has spiritual, mental/emotional, and physical attributes that benefit those different parts that make up who you are. They will break up damns where there are blockages in your energy flow. There are close to 400 of these points around your body. They are arranged in channels or meridians that run in identical pairs, one set of points on each side of the body. There are two different ones that run up the front of your body and another that runs up your spine. Back to Top
Are acupuncture points randomly found on the body? Acupuncture points have very specific locations on your body. Since your body is different from someone else, its location can be slightly different but it'll exist in the same general area.
How do you decide which points to use? Choosing acupuncture points is not a random decision. Each point has specific uses, metaphorically and intellectually. I choose the ones that will help you for the particular condition you have as well as for the state of mind you're in AND for the state of well being you WANT to be in. Back to Top
Why are modern studies of acupuncture often inconclusive? Because they ignore the human element that is so important in Chinese medicine. Modern medicine thinks that the mere action of taking action is enough to make you well. So they think that placing a needle in the body is all that's needed. But every time they test according to their standards, they don't get the results they expect, because they failed to account for the intention of both the patient and the doctor. More importantly, they fail to take into the individual and unique life circumstances of each person in the study. This is a major error in their methodology. You're not an inanimate thing. You're a living, breathing, thinking, and feeling being who has made many decisions. There is no one like you. Chinese medicine cannot be forced into a neat little package. Actually even most modern medical research has a tough time coming up with consistent conclusions. That's why they actually give you odds of success, which we never do. Back to Top
What's the secret of success? If you want to heal, if you have the correct clear intention, and are willing to do things differently, then you'll heal. When your TCMD or Acupuncturist has the same clear intention as you do, then you help each other to HELP you.
What happens when I'm not in this state of mind? If you are not really serious or are afraid of what will happen, then any amount of time, physical effort, and money will not create the healing you seek. It's not what a physician does for you, but what you believe, think, and feel about your predicament. So if you're not wholehearted, determined, open minded, open, and sincere, then you will fail. Back to Top
You are who you are and why is that important? When you're doing something that makes you happy and calm, if you're paying attention, then you're feeling extremely good about your life. This state of being is who you are. You're in a state of well being.
What happens when I'm not being who I am? You feel misery and pain or have some degenerative disease. But this is temporary. Even when you've suffered for many years or even decades, you can reverse all of it, when you finally learn to let go of your load.
